How I got my girlfriend involved.
1- properly dress for the weather
2- get a feel for how the sled handles
3-for the trails... rules and safety. It's not how good your are, but how dumb others can be.

I only had my old sleds 340 john deer spitfire and a 340 Yamaha Enticer if you want to learn, to me this a great way. We played in the field like kids Remember the good old days.

First I told her to dress for the weather, being cold suck's and will turn anyone off of the sport.
As she is a teacher for the Ottawa Safety Council and rides her her own Motorcycle she was not afraid of the sled and that right there was a bonus, no way she should want to be a passenger.
I let her get a feel for the sled, braking and steering in powder and hard pack snow she got comfortable.
When she bought her sled 03 MXZ600 (great price and I am to buy from her so she bought knowing I would take it off her hands if the sport was not for her) STEERING WAS THE ISSUE all over again cause of the weight of the sled once she got use to that we hit the trails.

She loves it, wants to buy a rev or that style, she likes the sport bike stance seating.

Like most people said make sure they are warm (feet and hands). Keep them off the lake at night until they have more riding time under their belt. One problem on the lake for a new rider maybe there last!

Yep, I don't know if this has been said, but give them absolute best gear you have. This will keep them super warm. Also put them on a super reliable sled that is almost gauranteed not to break down. Make sure they know the handsignals and all the rules of riding.

My wife learned on the 90 EXT and 92 Indy, and even though she was very experienced at that point, the first day I put her on the much heavier 99 RMK piped 700 she couldn't steer at all. The second time it was in powder and she rolled it in like 5 seconds and never wanted to ride it again. She always preferred her older lighter and lower sleds even though the suspension quality is awful by comparison. But I'm sure she's going to love the REV!

after reading these tips, I have to say. I agree with Jeff about no cotton and wet/sweat sucks. then I see Dave and he says lots of layers. yes its ok to do but careful not to over doo. trying to convince someone new to the sport they are cold from being over dressed and wet is hard to do. I find myself telling folks to dress less not more. now carrying extra layers is good and can be added as well as removed, which I know experianced riders will do. but like I said convince a newbie of that. all have good points for sure. I would guess that the short rides would be handy for helping to determine how much that particular person would need to wear for the conditions. one thing for sure if it is a woman, if momma ain't happy nobodys happy 3dmcommentssmiley9.gif

1) don't let them dress too warm, it's no fun to be bulky 2) put them on top of a narly hill and force them to go down it to see if they have what it takes. 3) ride as fast as you can in front of them but tell them there is no pressure to keep up, when you stop for them to catch up, roll your eyes when the finally get there and roost them taking off for the next stretch of trail. 4) give them a crappy sled, they might damage a new one. When they complain about darting, tell them to "get used it" or "they all do that"...5) make plenty of bar stops and encourage them to booze it up..6) do a ride across a lake and tell them to stay "light" on the sled as it might break through the ice, even better find a good lake crossing with lots of slush and act all panicky when you get into it, tell them to pin it or they will surely break through and sink. 7) If you see any wild life on the trail, chase it and tell them it's good sport to see if you can actually run the animal down.8) 1st ride should be at least 200mi. day to see if they are going to be wimps or complainers. 9) Do some boondocking with difficult moves and obstacles. Don't help them, see if they can figure it out. 10) If they break down, tell them to flag down the next group of riders , wish them luck and tell them you'll meet them at the bar later that night.
